With the NHL, NBA, and MLB suspending their seasons, sports fans are glooming over the loss of their sports during this surreal time. There have been several talks about resuming the season or officially cancelling the season until Covid-19 has died off.
The most notable league that talked about resuming their season is the NHL. Gary Bettman, the most controversial and most hated sports commissioner, has been in talks about resuming the NHL in August without fans.
WHAT?
Seriously, they want to resume the NHL in the month of August without any fans!
Okay Mr. Bettman, what about the players from Colorado and Ottawa being tested positive for the Coronavirus? That means you will be risking every player’s lives if you resume the NHL season.
Also, a lot of the NHL players are at home. If he resumes the season, that means the players have to leave their homes and families. Most arenas are in downtowns of their respective cities in which it could infect the players and the players can carry it to their families.
Let’s travel back in time and let’s just say we traveled back to 1919. Any significance? There should be because 1919 was the year of the deadly Spanish Flu Pandemic!
What does this have to do with today and the NHL?
Well, in the NHL’s second official season, 1918-1919, The Montreal Canadiens faced the Seattle Metropolitans of the old PCHA (Pacific Coast Hockey Association) in the Stanley Cup finals. With the series tied at two to two, the Spanish Flu pandemic has taken the world by storm. Several Canadiens players have been infected including Hockey Hall of Famer Joe Hall. Due to the outbreak of the Spanish Flu, the 1919 Stanley Cup final was officially cancelled and no championship was ever awarded to any team.
You see the significance now? This is very similar to what is happening right now!
There are a lot of problems resuming in August, other than the players and staff being tested positive for the coronavirus. Here is the thing, what is going to happen in October, which is the start of the NHL season. That means playoffs will happen in September and probably end in November. That will mess everything up for the league. The NHL would have to start up in the winter or spring if they resumed it in August.
To make matters even worse, Donald Trump agreed to have it resume in August. That’s right! Our President and Leader would risk the players lives by resuming the season. Says the person who wanted churches to be open on Easter! This whole thing is getting ridiculous.
Here’s an idea for both Gary Bettman and Trump: just cancel the season!
If Mr. Bettman cancels this season, that means this will be the third time the Stanley Cup will be engraved with “2019-2020 SEASON NOT COMPLETED.”
Also what will happen with the draft and draft lottery? Well for starters, they will either cancel the draft or just draft them like the NFL is doing it. They better not use the lottery system for this if the NHL decided to cancel the season. The NHL should do the same thing that the NFL does: just have the worst team pick first! That is all they have to do!
With the NHL season suspended, at least sports fans can watch classic games like classic Sabres games from when they were actually good! If there is no point of resuming the season, the only thing sports fans can do is just wait for this outbreak to die off and have the leagues start their seasons in their respective months.
