One of the biggest events of the year has been aired yesterday. That event would be the 2020 Academy Awards or also known as the Oscars. Every year, the Academy nominates one of the best films of year. It could be a drama, comedy, action, or sometimes comic book movies. This year was a huge moment for comic books. Why? The 2019 blockbuster, The Joker became the second comic book movie to be nominated for best picture. To make things even better, it had the most nominations by a comic book movie at 11. Despite Parasite winning best picture, Joker ended up winning for best music score and for best actor-Joaquin Phoenix.
This year was huge of Joaquin Phoenix. At the 2020 Academy Awards, Joaquin Phoenix has won his very first Oscar for best actor in a film. He was nominated for best actor for “The Master”, “Walk the Line”, and “The Gladiator.” He also became the second actor to play the Joker to win an Oscar-Heath Ledger won Best Supporting Actor for the character in the 2008 blockbuster “The Dark Knight.” After winning the award, Phoenix gave an emotional speech on the world and a little about his late brother River Phoenix. To just say, Joaquin had a tough life. In his speech, he mentioned that he has been selfish prior to winning his Oscar along with being hard to work with and being cruel with people. But he was generous that he has been given another chance from everyone surrounding him. He mentioned that no one should forget past mistakes that they made and try to reach out those that you need the most.
Other than talking about his past troubles in his emotional win, he delivered a powerful message on unity. He said that his win and film is about fighting injustice. He talked about how we are fighting against the belief of people with power-mostly politicians- exploiting one another with impunity. With this film, his character has been through tough times with society and his favorite talk show host using the Joker’s insanity against him. This is what he meant by fighting for injustice despite the Joker being one of Batman’s biggest archenemies. He concluded with a quote from his brother who passed away from a drug overdose when Joaquin was only 17 years old. This win meant a lot to Phoenix.
